Katie and I spent 4 days in Bucharest from 19-22 April 2002. It was lovely and hot. We stayed at the Holiday Inn. The balcony and swimming pool were very nice! We visited the Palace of the Parliament, which is the 3rd largest building in the world by volume (2.55 million cu m), after the Space Shuttle Assembly Building and the Quetzalcoatl Pyramid in Mexico, and the 2nd largest by floor area (330,000 sq. m) after the Pentagon. It is 12 stories high and has 1500 rooms. Construction started in 1984 but it was not finished until after Ceausescu's death.
The thing I remember most about Bucharest was all the stray dogs everywhere because Ceausescu had flattened whole districts of the city and had moved people who had lived in houses into tiny apartments in tower blocks and they couldn't take their dogs with them, and so there are now some 4000 stray dogs in Bucharest and they sleep in the parks and people feed them. And its tragic but they're so lovely!
