In August 1997 we spent 2 weeks in St. Ives, Cornwall, England. We rented an apartment on Porthmeor beach. For the first week we had a really nice apartment on the middle level of Barnaloft (no longer available for rent unfortunately). For the second week we moved up to a smaller studio apartment on the third floor. We had great fun on the beach and discovering ancient Cornish relics (not Dad).

Here we are in the B&B we stayed in for the night as there was one day in between the two apartment rentals: In the B&B

Here is our apartment during the 2nd week. It was very hot so we had to sleep with the windows open but then the seagulls woke us up at 4am every morning:

Cover of Mother & SunThis was the year we got into fogous. I discovered this book "Mother and Sun" by Ian McNeil Cooke (ISBN 0-9512371-6-0) which must be the definitive work on fogous in Cornwall. There are some excellent fogous in Cornwall - especially in West Penwith. The fogou below is on a farm near Pendeen. There are other interesting fogous at Halligye (the best in Cornwall), Carn Euny and Boleigh (not always open - contact Jo May at jomay@thenet.co.uk for an appointment to visit).

Here we are in 1997 (before I shaved off my beard) inside and emerging from various fogous in Cornwall:

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who knows about souterrains (similar to fogous) in Ireland. Please email me at keith.dickerson@btinternet.com if you have any information.
