Here are some of my favourite places around Kelsale. These include Walberswick, Sutton Hoo and Orford and Framlingham castles. These are the two best castles in Suffolk but there are others such as Bungay and Eye.
Orford Castle is around 800 years old. It was constructed by King Henry II from 1165-72 to protect the coast and to keep the local rebel family, the Bigods (whose base was Framlingham Castle) in check. It cost £1,412 which was a lot in those days! There are spectacular views over Orford Ness from the top.




Framlingham Castle was built in the 12th century by Roger Bigod the 2nd Earl of Norfolk. There is no central keep but it has 13 towers and a museum inside. There are spectacular views over Framlingham from the walkway around the top of the castle. In 1553 Mary Tudor was in residence when her step-brother Edward VI died. She then had to organize support quickly to reclaim her throne. See the Framlingham website for more information.
